Nobody books an appointment for rust. It gets discovered — usually by someone else, usually while your car is already in the air for something ordinary. The tech comes out, says there's “a lot of corrosion underneath,” and you're left trying to work out whether that was a warning or the opening of a sales pitch. Road salt rust damage in New Hampshire is real, it is expensive when it's ignored, and it is also the single easiest thing in this trade to oversell. At Vorenza Auto Repair we put southern NH cars on the lift every week, and most of the corrosion we find is cosmetic. The part that isn't can put a car on a flatbed.
This is the honest version: what the salt actually attacks, in the order we see it fail; which rust is worth your money and which is worth nothing but a note in the file; and what you can do in a winter that costs you about four dollars.
Why southern New Hampshire is close to a worst case for underbody rust
Corrosion needs three things: steel, oxygen, and an electrolyte to move ions between them. Water alone is a mediocre electrolyte. Salt water is an excellent one. Everything about a New Hampshire winter is designed, accidentally, to keep salt water in contact with your car's underside for as long as possible.
It isn't just rock salt anymore
Crews now pre-treat with liquid brine before a storm rather than only spreading rock salt after one. Brine works better — it stops ice bonding to the pavement in the first place — and it is worse for your vehicle for exactly the same reason. Rock salt is a solid that bounces, scatters, and needs moisture to activate. Brine is already a solution. It wicks into seams, flows up behind rocker panels, coats the top surfaces of crossmembers where no wheel spray would ever reach, and stays there. A car that's driven on a pre-treated road on a dry, cold morning picks up salt without ever touching visible slush.
Freeze-thaw keeps the chemistry running all winter
A car parked outside at 15°F is, briefly, safe — frozen salt water is not doing much. The damage happens on the swing. Park a salted car in a warm garage, or catch a 40°F February afternoon, and the brine liquefies and goes back to work in the dark. Southern New Hampshire crosses freezing and back in a single day for weeks at a time. That cycle is why a car here rusts faster than the same car in a place that simply stays cold.
Five months of exposure, every year, on the highway
Treatment season here runs roughly November into April. If you're commuting Derry to Manchester on I-93, or running Route 28 or Route 102 daily, you're doing it at speed — which atomizes the salt spray and drives it into every cavity the underbody has. Five months, times ten years, is why a 2014 commuter in Derry looks underneath like a much older car does in Virginia. What road salt rust damage in New Hampshire attacks first
Rust is not uniform. It starts where water sits, where a protective coating got chipped, and where two dissimilar metals meet. In this climate, it shows up in a fairly predictable order.
→Brake lines and fuel lines
Steel tubing, running the full length of the car, usually tucked along a frame rail or the floor pan where road spray collects and never fully dries. This is the most consequential corrosion on the vehicle and the one drivers know least about, so it gets its own section below.
→The exhaust system, from the inside out
Exhaust rots in both directions. Salt attacks the outside; condensation from short trips that never get the system fully hot pools inside the muffler and resonator and attacks the other side. A muffler that fails on a 2016 car in New Hampshire usually failed from within. This one costs you indirectly. The strut itself might be fine, but ten winters of brine turns the subframe bolts, sway bar links and caliper bracket hardware into a single seized mass. The part is still forty dollars; the labor to extract a snapped bolt is not. It is the main reason the same job quoted on a Carolina car and a New Hampshire car are two different numbers, and it's why we inspect hardware condition before quoting suspension work, not after.

Caliper slide pins need to move freely for the pads to release. Salt and grit turn the boots brittle, water gets in, and the pin seizes — so one pad drags, wears at twice the rate of its partner, and cooks the rotor. A seized parking brake cable is the same story: the drum or caliper never fully releases. Uneven pad wear on one corner is very often a corrosion problem wearing a brake problem's clothes.

The visible stuff, and usually the least urgent. Bubbling paint above a rocker means the panel has been rusting from the inside for years — drain holes at the bottom of the door and rocker get plugged with road grime, water sits in the cavity, and it works outward. Ugly, sometimes expensive to do properly, rarely a safety issue by itself.

The one nobody wants to find. These are structural — they carry suspension and drivetrain loads. Surface scale on a subframe is normal on any older New England car and means nothing. Flaking that comes away in layers, or a soft spot near a suspension mounting point, is a different conversation, and an honest one includes the possibility that the repair isn't worth the vehicle.
Scale like this on an axle looks alarming and usually isn't — it's surface corrosion on a heavy casting. What matters is what's underneath it, and whether the same conditions have reached the brake lines and mounting hardware a few inches away.
The failure that actually strands you: rusted brake lines
If you take one thing from this page, take this one. Your brakes are hydraulic. Pressing the pedal pressurizes fluid in steel lines that run the length of the car, and those lines sit in the worst possible place — low, exposed, and shielded from the rain that would otherwise rinse them.
Corrosion pits that tubing from the outside. The wall thins, and it holds pressure fine right up until it doesn't. The usual failure mode is a pinhole that opens under hard braking, which is the one time you were counting on it. You get a pedal that sinks toward the floor and a car that needs much more distance to stop.
This isn't a shop scare story. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a safety advisory on brake pipe corrosion after investigating hundreds of failures in salt-belt states, and its guidance was blunt: vehicles roughly seven years and older that have lived through winter road salt should have the brake system inspected for corrosion, and owners should wash the undercarriage regularly through the winter. Most cars in our bays are past that seven-year line.
What to watch for between inspections: a brake pedal that feels soft, spongy, or slowly sinks while you're stopped at a light; having to add brake fluid; or a wet spot or fluid trail near a wheel or along the underbody. Surface rust vs. structural rust: how to tell what you're looking at
This is the distinction that decides whether you should spend money, and it's the one most drivers have never had explained. Almost every vehicle that has spent a winter here has rust underneath. That fact alone tells you nothing.
Surface rust is orange, even, and thin. It sits on top of the metal. Scrape it with a screwdriver and you get dust and a solid surface underneath. On a subframe, an axle housing, a brake rotor hat or a control arm, it is cosmetic. It is not a repair. Any shop that quotes you work on the basis of orange-looking parts is selling you a color.
Scale is the middle stage — rust that has begun to lift off in flakes or layers, often darker and rougher. It means the corrosion has been going long enough to consume measurable metal. It's a “watch this, note it in the file, look again next year” finding on most components, and a more serious one on brake lines and fuel lines, where the wall was only ever a fraction of a millimeter thick.
Structural rust is perforation or softness. The screwdriver goes through, or the metal flexes where it shouldn't. On a brake line, a fuel line, a subframe, a suspension mounting point, or the frame itself, this is not a judgment call — it gets repaired or the vehicle gets retired. It is also, thankfully, the least common of the three.
The honest test is simple: ask what specifically is being replaced and why. “Your undercarriage is rusty” describes ninety percent of the cars in this state. “This brake line is pitted through here and I'd like you to look at it with me” is a real finding. If a shop won't take you to the lift, that tells you something too — it's a big part of why so many local drivers weigh up a dealership against an independent shop in the first place.

The most effective anti-rust measure available to you costs about four dollars and we make nothing from it: run your car through a wash with an undercarriage rinse every few weeks through the winter, and once more thoroughly in the spring. Pick a day above freezing so the water drains instead of refreezing in the cavities. That's NHTSA's own advice for salt-belt vehicles, it is worth more than most paid treatments applied over dirt, and it's the first thing we tell drivers who ask what they should be doing.

Does road salt really damage cars, or is that overblown?
It is real, but it is also routinely oversold. Salt and the liquid brine used to pre-treat roads are excellent electrolytes, which is exactly what corrosion needs to progress, and a New Hampshire car gets five months of exposure a year. What that produces on most vehicles is surface rust underneath, which is cosmetic and needs no repair. The genuine risks are narrower and specific: brake lines, fuel lines, suspension mounting points and the subframe. Those are the things worth inspecting. An orange-looking axle is not.

Is surface rust on my undercarriage something to worry about?
Usually not. Surface rust is thin and even, sits on top of the metal, and leaves solid steel underneath when you scrape it. Nearly every vehicle that has spent a winter in New Hampshire has it, and on a subframe, axle housing or control arm it is cosmetic. What matters is the next stage: rust that flakes away in layers, or metal that is soft or perforated. Should I wash my car in the winter, and how often?
Yes — and the part that matters is the undercarriage rinse, not the paint. Every few weeks through treatment season, and after any significant storm, is a reasonable rhythm; NHTSA suggests roughly monthly for salt-belt vehicles. Choose a day above freezing so the water drains out of the cavities instead of refreezing in them, and give the car a thorough wash in the spring to clear out what accumulated all winter. It costs a few dollars and it is genuinely the highest-value thing you can do about road salt.

Bottom line: rust is a maintenance problem until it's a brake problem
Almost all of the corrosion we find under southern New Hampshire cars is cosmetic and needs nothing but a note in the file. The exception is narrow and it matters: the steel lines carrying your brake fluid, and the points where the suspension bolts to the body. Those are worth a set of eyes once a year, and a car that is seven years or older here has earned that.
The useful way to think about road salt rust damage in New Hampshire is that you're not trying to stop it — you can't. You're trying to know where it is, so nothing about it is a surprise.
